Rhino Conservation: Our Ongoing Commitment at Wildscapes Foundation

At Wildscapes Travel, our dedication to protecting Africa’s iconic wildlife runs deep, and among the many species we work to safeguard, rhinos hold a special place in our hearts. These ancient creatures, which have roamed our planet for millions of years, now face an unprecedented battle for survival. Their strength and resilience have inspired us to take action, and through the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, we’re making a difference.

The Importance of Rhino Conservation

Rhinos are much more than majestic animals; they are keystones of Africa’s ecosystems, symbols of our shared responsibility to protect the natural world. Yet, these magnificent creatures are teetering on the brink of extinction due to poaching and habitat loss. The urgency of their situation cannot be overstated. Saving rhinos is not just about preventing the extinction of a species—it’s about preserving a vital part of our planet’s heritage for future generations.

Our Approach to Protecting Rhinos

Founded by John Banovich in 2007, the Banovich Wildscapes Foundation is committed to conservation efforts that make a tangible impact. We believe that protecting rhinos requires a multifaceted approach:

  • Protecting Large Conservation Areas: We prioritize securing vast landscapes where rhinos can roam freely and safely. By preserving these habitats, we create a future where rhinos, and the ecosystems they support, can thrive.

  • Supporting Scientific Research: The more we understand about rhino behavior, genetics, and needs, the better equipped we are to protect them. We actively fund research to further knowledge on effective conservation strategies, ensuring every action we take is grounded in science.

  • Promoting Sustainable Development: Conservation cannot happen in isolation. We work closely with local communities, creating sustainable economies that benefit both wildlife and the people who live alongside them. This ensures that the future of rhinos is closely tied to the well-being of the human communities that share their environment.

The Power of Collaboration

At Wildscapes Travel, we know that meaningful conservation is built on collaboration. Our partnerships with safari camps, lodges, local communities, and NGOs enable us to work together in protecting rhinos and their habitats. Clients, too, play a vital role—by matching contributions, they help amplify our impact on the ground. It’s a shared mission, and together, we are achieving great things.

A New Milestone: Mlevu Sanctuary

One of our most recent and proud achievements is the establishment of the Mlevu Sanctuary in Zimbabwe, where two white rhinos have recently been introduced. This effort, led by the Malilangwe Trust, is a significant step forward in the fight for rhino conservation. The meticulous translocation process involved locating, sedating, and safely transporting the rhinos to their new home. Once settled, these rhinos will be monitored to ensure they adapt well to their environment. The sanctuary represents more than just a safe haven—it is a powerful example of how conservation, community, and collaboration can unite to create lasting change.

Mlevu Sanctuary is Zimbabwe’s second community-led rhino sanctuary, showing how local involvement can transform conservation efforts. With over 40 local scouts dedicated to protecting these animals, the initiative also provides much-needed jobs and boosts tourism, creating a ripple effect that benefits people and wildlife alike.

On World Rhino Day

As John Banovich eloquently states, “Wildscapes represents expansive, thriving ecosystems full of wildlife—places vital for future generations.” Rhino conservation is not just a mission for today; it’s an investment in the future, ensuring that the wild places we cherish will continue to inspire and nurture future generations.

On World Rhino Day, we encourage everyone to reflect on the importance of these incredible animals. Every small action counts—whether it’s raising awareness, supporting conservation efforts, or simply learning more about these creatures and their struggles. The future of the rhino depends on the actions we take today. Together, we can make a difference.
